Are eBikes allowed on the Newport Beach boardwalk?

Legal bicycles and e-bikes may be ridden on the Newport Beach oceanfront boardwalk, subject to posted rules and restrictions. The maximum posted speed on the boardwalk is 8 mph.

Riders should slow down around pedestrians, travel carefully, keep right when appropriate, and follow all posted signs. Bicycles and e-bikes are not permitted on the sand, and Newport Beach generally prohibits bicycle riding on sidewalks unless a location is specifically designated otherwise.

Rules can change, so riders should always follow current City of Newport Beach signs and regulations. Visit the City of Newport Beach e-bike safety page for current safety information.

What are the best bike routes in Newport Beach?

The Newport Beach boardwalk is the easiest and most popular local ride. Other recommended eBike routes include:

  • Balboa Pier to Newport Pier

  • Newport Pier to 32nd Street

  • The Balboa Peninsula to The Wedge

  • The Lido Island Loop

  • Balboa Island using the Balboa Ferry

  • A longer coastal ride toward Huntington Beach

See our Newport Beach eBike Ride Map for route ideas and local points of interest.

What is the best eBike ride for a first-time visitor?

For most first-time visitors, we recommend riding the Newport Beach boardwalk from Balboa Pier toward Newport Pier and 32nd Street.

It is a scenic, mostly flat coastal ride with easy access to beaches, restaurants, piers, and harbor areas. We can adjust the recommendation based on your rental time, riding experience, crowds, and weather.

How long should I rent an eBike for?

A two-hour rental is usually enough to explore the boardwalk, Balboa Peninsula, Newport Pier, and parts of Lido Island without making many long stops.

An all-day rental is better if you want to stop for food, visit the beach, explore local shops, ride to The Wedge, take the Balboa Ferry, or continue toward Huntington Beach.

Overnight and weekly rentals are available for visitors staying nearby.

Can I ride an eBike from Newport Beach to Huntington Beach?

Yes. Many all-day renters ride north from the Balboa Peninsula toward Huntington Beach using coastal bicycle paths and designated routes.

This is a longer ride, so an all-day rental is recommended. Before leaving, ask our staff about the best current route, battery range, and turnaround time.

Can I ride an eBike to The Wedge?

Yes. The ride from the Balboa Fun Zone down the Balboa Peninsula to The Wedge is one of our favorite local routes.

The Wedge is located near the end of the peninsula and is especially popular when there is large surf. Riders should keep bicycles and e-bikes on legal paved routes and off the sand.

Can I take a rental eBike to Balboa Island?

Yes. Riders can take the Balboa Ferry between the Balboa Peninsula and Balboa Island with an eBike, subject to the ferry’s current operating rules, capacity, and fare.

Balboa Island is a popular destination for sightseeing, waterfront views, shopping, and food. Ask us for route guidance before leaving.

Is Newport Beach bike-friendly?

Yes. Newport Beach has a large network of coastal paths, bike lanes, paved routes, and scenic riding areas.

Popular riding areas include the oceanfront boardwalk, Balboa Peninsula, Balboa Island, Lido Island, Newport Harbor, Back Bay, and routes extending north toward Huntington Beach. Riders must still obey traffic laws, posted restrictions, and local speed limits.

Can beginners ride your eBikes?

Yes. Most of our customers can ride our eBikes even if they have never used an electric bike before.

Before every rental, we explain the controls, brakes, pedal assist, throttle operation, safe starting and stopping, and local riding rules. Riders should already be comfortable balancing and operating a regular bicycle.

What is the minimum age to rent or ride an eBike?

Riders must be at least 14 years old. Riders ages 14 through 17 must ride with the permission and supervision required by a parent or legal guardian and must wear a helmet.

Age requirements may also depend on the type and legal classification of the eBike being operated.

Are helmets included with eBike rentals?

Yes. Helmets are included with every Balboa eBike Rentals rental at no additional charge.

California law requires riders under 18 to wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet. We recommend helmets for every rider regardless of age.

Do you accept walk-up eBike rentals?

Yes. Walk-up rentals are welcome whenever bikes are available.

Reservations are recommended on weekends, holidays, sunny days, and during the busy summer season. Booking online is the best way to lock in your desired rental date and starting time.

Can I reserve an eBike online?

Yes. You can select your rental date, starting time, number of riders, and bikes through our online eBike reservation page.

Online payments are processed securely through Square, and Apple Pay is accepted.

Do you offer group eBike rentals?

Yes. Balboa eBike Rentals accommodates families, friend groups, company outings, hotel guests, and other group rides depending on availability.

For larger groups, call or text (949) 214-6188 so we can confirm the number of bikes and help coordinate your starting time.

Call or text (949) 214-6188 for availability and extended-rental pricing.

Where can I park near the Balboa Fun Zone and Newport Beach boardwalk?

Public parking is available in paid lots and along streets throughout the Balboa Peninsula, but spaces can fill quickly on weekends, holidays, and sunny summer days.

We created a Balboa Peninsula Secret Parking Map showing free street-parking areas and paid parking options near the Balboa Fun Zone and boardwalk. Give yourself additional time to park before your reservation.

What is the best time to ride the Newport Beach boardwalk?

Earlier mornings and weekdays usually have fewer pedestrians and less bicycle traffic. Late afternoon and sunset rides offer great coastal views but may be busier.

Conditions vary by season, weather, holidays, and local events. We provide current route suggestions when you arrive.
